TeTesting season can bring a lot of stress—for students and teachers alike. The pressure to perform can quickly shift a calm classroom into a chaotic one. That’s why blending test prep with effective SEL strategies is essential. These tools not only help students stay focused, but also build the emotional resilience they need to tackle tests with confidence.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. With just a few intentional SEL routines, we can help students enter testing season feeling grounded, not frazzled. In this post, I’ll walk you through five of my favorite test prep SEL strategies that don’t require a full lesson plan—just a few minutes of calm, connection, and care.
Why SEL Belongs in Test Prep
We often think of SEL as a “nice to have” — something we squeeze in between the “real work.” But in reality, helping students self-regulate, reframe stress, and feel supported is exactly what helps them perform well.
SEL during testing isn’t fluff. It’s focus.
Research shows that students with strong emotional regulation perform better on high-stakes tests. When students feel safe, seen, and supported, their brains are free to do the hard work of problem-solving and recall. Even five minutes a day can make a difference.
5 SEL Strategies to Calm Test Prep Chaos
Test Day Power Questions
Start the morning with simple prompts that build confidence and metacognition. Have students journal or discuss questions like:
- What helps me stay calm when I’m nervous?
- What does success look like to me?
- How can I help a classmate feel brave today?
These quick reflections shift focus from fear to empowerment.
Mindful Movement Breaks
Before testing, invite students to take a 1-minute body reset. Try:
- “Shake Out the Stress” (wiggle hands, feet, shoulders)
- “Melt Like a Popsicle” (slowly relax from head to toe)
These breaks regulate nervous systems and reset attention without disrupting the flow.
Power Badges: Emotional Anchors
Introduce the idea of Power Badges (like “+5 Calm,” “+3 Focus,” or “+2 Confidence”) to help students name and claim the strengths they’re bringing to the test.
Let them draw their own badges, wear sticker versions, or even role-play collecting power-ups. It’s playful—but powerful.
Encouragement Partners
Pair students up before test time. Give them 30 seconds to say something encouraging to one another:
- “You’re prepared for this.”
- “You’re doing your best.”
- “You’re not alone.”
This simple practice fosters connection and builds positive energy across the room.
Color Your Calm Art Prompts
Give students five minutes to draw a calming scene, pattern, or power pose. You can even offer themes like:
- “Draw your calm brain”
- “Draw your success shield”
- “Draw your happy place”
This provides a creative outlet for stress and helps students visualize safety and strength before the test begins.
Test prep doesn’t have to be all drill and dread. By weaving in quick, low-prep SEL moments, we help students show up not just academically ready, but emotionally steady.
You don’t need a whole new curriculum—just a few simple strategies, repeated with care.
Putting These Strategies Into Practice
Even small, consistent moments of social-emotional support can make a big impact during testing season. Choose one or two strategies that feel manageable and build from there. Whether it’s a daily affirmation or a quick breathing break, these routines help students stay grounded and ready to learn. Over time, you’ll not only reduce test anxiety—you’ll foster a classroom culture rooted in confidence, calm, and connection.
